How to get youth members the Provo Utah way
This is the coolest thing I have seen in a while.
#1. Provo High School is making financial education a requirement for graduating from high school. This is brilliant and can only help the credit union cause.
#2. Seeing an opportunity to be apart of this revolutionary idea - Utah Community Credit Union has opend a satellite branch on campus and has employed 6 students to run this branch (under supervision of course).
The students are interns. I assume this is so that their work goes towards their class credits and not as a work experience program. But, at the end, each student participant receives a $500 scholarship and a full time job at the main credit union branches if they want.
What an excellent way to involve the youth market and build relationships. Not only are they providing excellent incentives, education and support - they are building a brand that will pay dividends for decades to come.
Color me a fan of UCCU and the Provo School District. If anyone from either organization reads our happy little blog here would like to give some details how it might be possible to duplicate this program in other cities and states - I know you would have an alert and interested audience.

I don’t know about scholarships or job offers, but otherwise this sounds a lot like what TwinStar CU (my employer) is doing with the Bobcat Branch. It just opened in a new high school in our area.

“They are building a brand that will pay dividends for decades to come” - too many CUs are worried about this quarter/year. Sure these initiatives won’t show a lot of immediate ROI, but the long term benefits of getting members early (before their prime borrowing years) make a good business case for doing this.
Not to mention it’s part of our mission!
